Eastern Indigo Snake Education and Propagation

Southern Reptile Education is pleased to announce the Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon couperi) program.  Eastern Indigo Snakes are Threatened both within the state of Georgia and nationwide.  Our Indigo Snake program is twofold.

Public Education
The Eastern Indigo Snake is a valuable addition to our public education and outreach programs.  This magnificent creature is not only representative of its species, but an entire ecosystem.  The Indigo Snake conservation transverses into habitat protection, Gopher Tortoise, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Gopher Frog, and hundreds of other species that share the same habitat.  By bringing this animal to the public and letting them experience the majesty of this amazing creature, we hope to bring a greater awareness of the plight of our Georgia wildlife and habitat.
Captive Propagation
Unfortunately, there are very few Eastern Indigo Snakes available for public education.  One reason is that permits are very difficult to obtain and highly coveted.  But more importantly, is price.  Private breeders outside of the state of Georgia often charge over $1,000 for a specimen.  This is not viable for most institutions such as State Parks and Nature Centers.  To aid in bringing more of these animals into the public, Southern Reptile Education is very pleased to offer the prospect of the first private captive breeding program of Drymarchon couperi.  Each and every offspring produced will become the property of Georgia Department of Natural Resources to be distributed to other educators and institutions throughout the state of Georgia absolutely free of charge.
Special thanks to Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Dean Allesandrini, Dirk Stevenson, and Tony Carlisle for helping this ground breaking program come to throuition.
