Gopher Tortoise Surveys

Join our 2006 Gopher Tortoise Survey

Why Gopher Tortoise Surveys:

Gopher Tortoises are in great decline throughout their entire range. This is not only a problem for the Tortoises, but also the hundreds of animals that depend on the burrows for survival. This includes species such as the magnificent Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, the threatened Eastern Indigo Snake, and the Endangered Gopher Frog. It is imperative that population densities and health are evaluated. Every piece of information we can collect helps to create programs and manage the species to ensure its future.

About the Surveys:

Southern Reptile Education and its volunteers work with General Coffee State Park to conduct these surveys. Burrows are checked in designated areas to evaluate status and activity level. Captured Tortoises are logged, weighed, measured, identified or given a distinct identifier if it does not already have one, then released. This information gives information on the individual Tortoises and allows the park to track growth and population densities in different areas of the park.
