Urban Snake Population Tracking

Urban Snake Population Tracking

Urban areas are a unique habitat for snakes in the sense that rather than one large habitat, it consists of hundreds of microhabitats separated by buildings, homes, and roads. Very little is known about which snakes are actually thriving in such areas and their population ecology. Southern Reptile Education is instituting a Population Tracking Initiative. This will be a database of verified sightings and captures. One of the primary tools is the public through our Photo Submission link. Visitors are encouraged to send as much information as possible for us to get accurate records. All of the information will be compiled into an ongoing database for use, as needed, by Department of Natural Resources or researchers.

Examples of submitted photos

These are examples of some of the photos sent to us for identification. These are exceptional photographs that allow us to identify the animal with no trouble. Photographs do not have to be this good. We can work with about any photo for identification so don't hesitate to send one even if you think it is not that good.
